Therapy for Young Children

The Language Stimulation Program serves eighteen month to three year old children who have moderate to severe speech and language disorders. Often at least one child per semester in the program is hearing impaired and a total communication approach is used with all children in the group therapy program. Activities are designed to develop personal-social, cognitive, fine and gross motor and communication skills. Parents/caregivers are included in the therapeutic process and sign language instruction is provided weekly for parents. The Language Stimulation Program is located at MSHC-East on the Park Avenue Campus of The University of Memphis at Park and Getwell.

The Pediatric Language Program (PLP) serves three to five year old children with moderate to severe speech and language disorders. Each child receives individual, small group, and large group therapy. Daily activities emphasize the development of communication skills in an environment that also enhances pre-academic, motor, cognitive, personal-social, and emerging literary skills. Parents/caregivers are included in the therapeutic process.

The Pediatric Language Program is located at MSHC-East on the Park Avenue Campus of The University of Memphis at Park and Getwell.

The Early Language Group is for young children with significant communication impairments. The emphasis is on eliciting early developing language skills. Services are aimed at, but not limited to, children whose communication issues are secondary to Autism Spectrum Disorders, mental handicapping conditions, or significant oral motor dysfunction. Visual supports (picture + graphics) are utilized to enhance processing of auditory information, elicit verbal expression, and provide an augmentative support to verbal communication. Individualized goals are embedded into functional, age-appropriate play and parent training and involvement is encouraged.

The Early Language Group is located at the Memphis Speech & Hearing Center at 807 Jefferson Ave.
