About Us
The University of Memphis Chapter of the National Student Speech-Language Hearing Association is a very active and longstanding organization. All students enrolled in the School of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology at the U of M are automatically members of the local chapter and are registered members of the National organization as well. The local chapter participates in many activities each year to include assisting in providing inexpensive transportation to the annual convention of ASHA, sponsoring short workshops and teleconferences of special interest, supporting the "NSSLHA Loves" project each year, hosting seasonal parties and sponsoring the Mid-South Conference on Communicative Disorders. The highlight of each year's activities is the Mid-South Conference, held annually in late February or early March. The 2-day conference is designed to aid audiologists and speech-language pathologists in implementing current research, new concepts and techniques into the clinical situation. Organized in 1970, the Mid-South Conference is the oldest and largest student sponsored conference in the country, drawing over 750 audiologists, speech-language pathologists, educators, physicians, and parents from the U.S. and Canada. It features a variety of nationally and internationally recognized guest speakers in the field of communication disorders who offer workshops and short courses. The conference is the major activity organized and conducted by the graduate students of The University of Memphis Chapter of NSSLHA.

Over half the doctoral faculty in the School of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology are Fellows of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). This designation is awarded to only about one percent of the 118,000 members of ASHA.

Our audiology program is ranked 8th and speech-language pathology is ranked 13th in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.
